The Truth About What You Don’t Have Yet
TL;DR: You get what you want by doing things you haven’t done before, by stirring the pot and forcing yourself to learn and grow through trial and error.
As I spoke, the lights went dark.
It was probably an electrical glitch, but the timing was perfect. It happened right as I was saying, “If you don’t choose, you’ll just stay in the dark.”
I was recording a video about finding your life’s purpose.
The short answer is you find it by doing things you haven’t done before, by stirring the pot and forcing yourself to learn and grow through trial and error.
If you don’t know what to do, just do something. Take a guess and give it a try. If you don’t choose, you’ll stay in the dark.
But there are a lot of unspoken issues with choosing what you want, or even what you think you want. We’re going to cover them all in three categories.
Two Truths and a Lie
I’ve played this game in group settings, when we’re just getting to know each other.
You tell the group three facts about yourself. But only two of them are true. The group has to guess what you’re lying about.
When you’re stuck, you can play a special version of Two Truths and a Lie. Ask yourself these two questions:
What are 2 uncomfortable truths you’re not acknowledging?
What lie are you telling yourself?
I'm going to give you the two uncomfortable truths that are probably keeping you from what you want because you're not acknowledging them or dealing with them.
The First Truth
The First of these two truths is very simple.
It's the truth that you need to acknowledge, which is that you are truly capable of anything you want.
And I'll give you an example.
My wife and I live on this beautiful farm in a beautiful natural place.
Now, a lot of people dream about getting land and going and living out in the country, but 95% of them just dream and don't actually do it.
We did it, and we're surrounded by neighbors and people who have also done it.
We had to learn a little bit about real estate and how to build a chicken coop. We had to figure out some new ways to generate income. Three years ago, this was all brand new to us.
And that’s the point.
All you have to do, to get anything you want, is to be willing to try out a few things you've never done before.
There are hundreds of ways to build a healthier mind and body.
There are thousands of ways to find love, to secure fame and glory, to start a business.
There are an infinite number of ways to make money, if that’s what you need.
No matter what you want, there are literally an uncountable number of pathways to reach it.
And all you have to do is be willing to try something new, to do things that you haven't done already.
The Second Truth
The Second Truth is the inverse of the First Truth : If you don’t have what you want and aren’t getting closer to what you want, it means you’re acting like you don’t really want it.
You’ve refused the adventure, and you’re doing what you’ve already done, doing what’s familiar and comfortable.
You’re not willing to do something you’ve never done before, and so you’re stuck.
Now, the thing that keeps you stuck, the force which stops you from trying new things, is probably the lie you’re telling yourself.
Everybody's got a Big Lie that they pretend to believe.
It’s something that you've completely absorbed.
You’ve internalized your Lie, and it's stopping you from doing what you want, having what you want, and being who you want.
We’ll dive into the Lie in the next issue, but let me end this with something for you to ponder:
You already know what your Lie is. Why are you letting it control you?
